Schematic diagram of the basic model of virus dynamics. When a susceptible cell and a virus meet, the cell becomes infected. The infected cell releases to the extracellular medium the progeny of the initial infecting virus. The new progeny will in turn infect additional susceptible cells. At this point a chain reaction is started which is the basis of the cellular and viral dynamics during an infection (adapted from [144]).
